Adaptive Coping Skills & Effective Problem Solving for Pre-Adolescents

A DBT-Informed Approach

Many pre-adolescent children are more sensitive and experience their emotions much faster and stronger than their peers. The high emotional sensitivity these children experience can leave them feeling anxious, depressed, and alone while the overwhelming nature of their emotions causes them to exhibit verbal and physical aggression towards parents, siblings, teachers, and friends. The emotion dysregulation and behavioral dyscontrol these children experience may lead to family stress, difficulties in school and problems with peer relationships.

Our DBT-informed program is for pre-adolescent children (ages 8-12) who demonstrate emotion dysregulation and behavioral dyscontrol. We view problematic behaviors as children doing “the best they can” in dealing with the intensity of their emotions and our program will help children acquire adaptive coping skills and effective problem-solving strategies while teaching their parents how to create a validating and change-ready environment. Parents will learn the same DBT “skills” as their children and become empowered to “coach” their children to respond more adaptively when they are experiencing emotional distress. Our program requires that the child and parents participate on a weekly basis for three different components of therapy which include:

  • Individual child therapy
  • Parent training
  • DBT skills training
